VSEA Pursues Grievance To Protect NMU, Corrections & Supervisory Employees With Upcoming Step Dates

VSEA grievance filed on behalf of NMU, Corrections and Supervisory members with Step Dates that fall between June 21, 2010, and June 30, 2010.

VSEA Field Representative Chris Teifke is representing VSEA members on a pending Step III grievance filed by the union on behalf of Non-Management, Corrections and Supervisory employees with a Step Date that falls between June 21 and June 30, 2010.

VSEA General Counsel Michael Casey described the grievance as follows:

“To put it simply, the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) commencing July 1 requires that all Steps that occur while it is in effect be postponed by two years. DHR is saying that because new Steps are not paid until the first pay period immediately following the Step Date, people who have Step Dates that occur during the current contract, but who would not actually be paid for those step dates until after July 1, must wait two years to receive them.  Our grievance asserts that the Step dates occur on the actual step date.  So if someone has a June 29 step date, they should be paid at the new step date–even though that pay does not commence until after July 1.  Under our interpretation, the person’s step date will be frozen for two years as of June 29, 2010.”

Casey says the grievance will likely go to the Labor Board
