VSEA member and Probation and Parole Officer Mike Arace (pictured here at microphone) and some of his colleagues traveled from Brattleboro to Montpelier this morning to testify to the Senate Corrections Committee about why they want to be allowed to carry a firearm while on the job—but only after completing extensive training and being certified as a law enforcement officer.
While testifying, Arace wore his DOC-issued bulletproof vest because he wanted to show lawmakers the only piece of equipment he and other P&P Officers currently have to defend themselves while on the job. VSEA P&P Officers testified about some of the threats made against them and even their family Officers also reported visiting homes where firearms were visibly on the premises.
The DOC has taken a neutral position on the bill.
New Hampshire P&P officers carry firearms, and New York state parole officers are also allowed to carry firearms, after being trained.
