VSEA, VtNEA & Others  Join Treasurer At Press Conference To Highlight Pension Progress

1/7/24

VSEA President Aimee Bertrand joined the State Treasurer and other Vermont labor leaders on Tuesday morning for a press event to remind Vermonters about Act 114 being enacted. Act 114 is “an act relating to amending various public pension and other post-employment benefits” for Vermont state employees and teachers. It’s intended to help shore up the fund and its creation was a joint effort between the State and VSEA and the VTNEA.

“Act 114 demonstrates what we can achieve for Vermonters when lawmakers and unions work together,” the Treasurer reminded.  “It ensures a fiscally responsible path forward for the state while protecting vital benefits, proving that we can make progress without compromising the security of state employees. Lawmakers must continue their support of the pensions to protect the retirement security of state employees and to ensure the long-term strength of Vermont’s workforce, which is essential to the state’s success and stability.”

VSEA’s Bertrand said she was “heartened” by the developments being discussed at the press conference, reminding that “Vermont’s pension system is so robust today because of a process that ensured that the voices of State employees and teachers were heard loud and clear— that there was no decision made about us without us.”

“A pension is a promise to the thousands of Vermonters who work every day in communities around the state to ensure their fellow Vermonters are receiving the vital services they need. I’m encouraged that elected leaders are increasingly recognizing the importance of keeping that promise if we want a State that meets the needs of all Vermonters.

Now is the time to continue with purpose down the path that we have all agreed upon. All stakeholders must continue their support of the pension system to protect the retirement security of state employees and ensure the long-term strength of Vermont’s workforce.

I want to thank Treasurer Pieciak’s office for its fine work on this issue, and to recognize the ongoing contributions of state employees who have served on VSERS, VPIC, and the Pension Task Force. It has been your voices that have ensured that your colleagues will continue to have the retirement security that they were promised.”

Also speaking at the event were Vermont-NEA President Don Tinney, Vermont Troopers Association Executive Director Michael O’Neil, Vermont Pension Investment Commission Chair Thomas Golonka and State Retirement Board Chair Eric Davis.
