VSEA Retiree & Longtime Public Employee Vaughn Altemus Honored This Week With House Resolution

VSEA Retirees Chapter President and Vermont Rep. Bob Hooper introduced a resolution that was read this week in House chambers, honoring longtime VSEA member, now retiree, Vaughn Altemus. 

Hooper’s resolution read:

Whereas, Vaughn Altemus was a dedicated scholar who graduated as a political science major with high honors and distinction from the University of Delaware, where he was awarded membership in the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies, and 

Whereas, the University of Wisconsin at Madison awarded him a master’s degree in public administration and a doctoral degree in political science, and after earning his doctorate, Vaughn Altemus joined the political science faculty at the University of Vermont, and 

Whereas, Vaughn Altemus served as an adjunct faculty member at Trinity College, in the fields of administration of justice and political science, and at Champlain College, teaching an introductory American government course, and

Whereas, in 1997, Vaughn Altemus joined the professional staff of what was then the Department of Education, and in 2001, he assumed the role of education finance manager, a position that made him responsible for analyzing actual and budgeted expenditures of the State’s school districts, and 

Whereas, later he was assigned to the office of the Secretary of Education to work primarily on legislation that realigned the structure of some of the State’s school districts, and he remained in this position until his retirement in 2015, and 

Whereas, Vaughn Altemus served from January 1999 through March 2015 on the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Teachers’ Retirement System, a panel responsible for supervising the retirement system for the State’s licensed educators, and 

Whereas, for a decade, beginning in 2008, Vaughn Altemus was a member of the Vermont Pension Investment Committee, which is responsible for the investment and management of the combined funds of the municipal employees’, State employees’, and teachers’ retirement systems, and

Whereas, Vaughn Altemus completed an admirable record of public service, now therefore be it 

Resolved by the House of Representatives: 

That the General Assembly honors Vaughn Altemus for his career achievements in academia and Vermont State government, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Vaughn Altemus.
