VSEA Members and Frontline Employees Put Vermonter’s Safety First

Main Street, Montpelier, July 11

In the aftermath of the catastrophic damage this week’s flooding has caused, we are reminded, how first and foremost, VSEA members and their families, sacrifice their own comfort and security to answer the call for the people of Vermont each day and especially in an emergency. They leave the press conferences to others and quietly do the work that keeps Vermonters safe. Long after the flood waters recede, VSEA members will be steadily at work helping to rebuild and recover. It is in moments like this that Vermonters rely on state employees the most. Thank you for all that you and your families go through to keep government functioning in a crisis while also responding to the danger it presents to Vermonters.

Below, please find links to resources. And, please, heed this advice from Senator Bernie Sanders’ office:

  • Turn off the circuit breaker in your home before you evacuate – if you can do so safely.

  • If rising water is approaching, leave.

  • If you need to evacuate, do so over high ground. Plan that route as soon as possible.

  • If your home floods, have a licensed electrician inspect your electrical system before you once again occupy your home.

  • If you are in a flood-prone area, or if you believe your home will be flooded, it is advisable to move valuables from your basement in case water enters your home.

  • Check your insurance coverage now, and then contact your insurance company if you have damage
