2023 Annual Meeting Warn

On Saturday, September 9, VSEA is holding its 79th Annual Meeting! This year’s VSEA Annual Meeting and September Council Meeting are being held in person at the Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa in Stowe, Vermont. An online option will be available for the September Council Meeting only. There will not be an online option for Annual Meeting. For Council members attending online, the Zoom information will be emailed and posted to VSEA.org in the days prior to the meeting. Annual Meeting is your union’s most important event of the year, as members come together to set VSEA priorities and vote on an operating budget (including dues) and bylaw-change proposals.

Please take some time in advance of September 9 to familiarize yourself with the content in the VSEA Annual Meeting Warn, and, if you are planning to attend, please keep this information available for further review during the meeting. If you are not planning to attend, but have comments or questions about something you saw in this year’s Warn, please contact your VSEA Board of Trustees member or a VSEA Council member in advance of September 9.

Hope to see as many members and retirees as possible at this year’s VSEA Annual Meeting!

The Freedom Foundation: A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing

VSEA is aware that the Freedom Foundation–fronting as the organization “Opt Out Today”– is sending mailers urging members to stop paying union dues.

VSEA members should be aware that this is a coordinated effort, funded by billionaires, with the ultimate goal to weaken unions across our country so bosses can more easily suppress employee wages and benefits. In return, the billionaires become even wealthier.

These letters sometimes falsely claim to be legal notices but know that members are in no way obligated to respond to any letter urging them to leave their union.

Your union will always fight for you, but every member who leaves makes it more difficult for VSEA bargaining teams to negotiate strong contracts with fair wages, good benefits, and workplace safety protections. See the benefits of VSEA membership.

Who and what is the ‘Freedom’ Foundation?

The Freedom Foundation is a front group for corporate special interests. They promote policies in state government that are very bad for public services and state employees.

You Could Be VSEA’s Next Second Vice President or Clerk!

Do you want to get involved with the leadership of your union? One of the best ways to do so is to serve on the VSEA Board of Trustees. VSEA is running a special election and is now accepting petitions for Second Vice President and Clerk. Below are brief descriptions of these positions:

  • VSEA Second Vice President: Two-year term. Acts as an alternate when the VSEA First Vice President is not available.

  • VSEA Clerk: Two-year term. Takes notes and prepares meeting minutes for VSEA Board of Trustees meetings, Council meetings, and VSEA Annual Meeting. Submits minutes to VSEA staff who post and distribute minutes to members.

Any member in good standing can run for an Officer position. If you are interested in running for a VSEA Board of Trustees’ seat there are two ways to do so:

Please note that non-VSEA member signatures are not valid on your petition. You can recruit non-members to become full-fledged members online here.

The deadline for filing petitions for the VSEA Officer seats listed above is 4:30 PM on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Let’s Help Beth!

Dear VSEA Family,

As many of you may know, Beth McLean is a supervisor out of the Brattleboro Probation and Parole office and has been battling colon cancer for the past three years. She has recently been given some bad news and despite multiple rounds of chemo and various treatment, the cancer continues to grow and has spread. Doctors have determined that she has 6 to 9 months left. She has been working from home or a hospital bed to keep her and her young family afloat. She has nearly exhausted all her leave fighting this for so long and is close to going off payroll. I’m hoping we can help or at least ease the financial burden enough that when she needs to rest, she can or if she would like to enjoy a day with her young son she may do so without worry.

With Beth’s permission, I created a Go Fund Me account to support her and her family during this battle. Should you be interested in contributing to the fund, we welcome and deeply appreciate your assistance.
