Members of the Vermont State Employee Association’s (VSEA) Election, Rules and Nominating (ERN) Committee counted ballots at union headquarters today and announced the overwhelming ratification of a new two-year contract by VSEA members belonging to the union’s Judiciary Units.

The Vermont State Employees’ Association Board of Trustees met in special session on June 23 and voted to name Steve Howard to be the union’s new Executive Director. Howard currently serves as VSEA’s Legislative Director; a position he has held since January 2013.

In the wake of VSEA’s recent attempt to pass legislation to reduce the State of Vermont’s dependence on private, for-profit, often out-of-state contractors, VSEA is sharing this new study “Race to the Bottom” by the group In The Public Interest with members. The study begins:
“A growing body of evidence and industry wage data suggest an alarming trend: outsourcing public services sets off a downward spiral in which reduced worker wages and benefits can hurt the local economy and overall stability of middle and working class communities.”
