Remembering Lara; eleven years later.

Today, August 7, 2026, marks the eleventh anniversary of the tragic death of VSEA member Lara Sobel, a DCF social worker, who was murdered by a client, just outside the office building in Barre where she worked. 

Since Sobel’s death, with few exceptions, Vermont leaders have failed to address major safety concerns at many state worksites. Employees need enhanced protections, especially in a world that has become more volatile and more violent. 

Lara was more than her job. She was a mother, wife, mentor, friend, neighbor, community member…etc.

No one should have to fear for their safety while working to provide for their families.

Today, and every August 7, we take a moment to remember Lara and ask that while on your break, place a call or send an email from your personal phone or personal computer to Governor Scott with a simple message: “Our safety matters, support increased security at state worksites.”
