GUILFORD, Vt. (WCAX) Vermont State Police say one person died in a house fire in Guilford early Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the rural property on Autumn Hill Drive around 4:15 a.m. Tuesday morning. Four people were inside the home at the time. One did not make it out.

"The sky was completely rose red," said Bill Heyman, who lives a couple of houses down from what's left of the home. "Our neighborhood is a little shaken by this."

Two people were in the apartment and were able to escape the burning residence. Two people were also in the home, but only one of them survived. The victim has been identified at 52-year-old Timothy White.

"First member showed up, struck a second alarm and confirmed we still had a subject inside. We got here and had heavy fire showing from the middle of the building. We went to a defensive attack," said Guilford Fire Chief Jared Bristol.

He says the remote location of the house did not help matters. "The first couple trucks emptied their supply line coming up the driveway which is over 15-hundred feet."

State police investigators were on scene Tuesday trying to determine what sparked the deadly blaze. At this time they do not believe it is suspicious.

"To lose a neighbor like that -- count your blessings. Could happen to you," Heyman said.

Vermont State Police say the fire started in the basement, however the cause is still undetermined. The house is total loss.
